TALES FROM THE ROAD
Emrys Williams Enduro Field Technician
Episode One: Preparing for the Project.
Behind Every Successful ILI Run Is a Team That Started Preparing Long Before the Tool Ever Entered the Launcher.
When most people think about an In-Line Inspection (ILI) project, they picture the launch of a sophisticated inspection tool, miles of pipeline, and the valuable integrity data gathered at the end of the run. What often goes unseen is the extensive preparation that takes place before a field technician ever arrives at the launch site.
In the first installment of “Tales from the Road”, we take a closer look at what it takes to prepare for mobilization and why preparation is one of the most critical phases of any successful pipeline integrity project.
Every Pipeline Is Different:
One of the first realities an ILI technician learns is that no two launchers, receivers, or pipeline systems are exactly alike. Before a project begins, technicians must verify that both the launcher and receiver can safely accommodate the inspection tool selected for the survey.
This includes reviewing:
• Launcher and receiver dimensions
• Isolation trap configurations
• Pipeline wall thicknesses
• Product flow characteristics
• Line operating conditions
• Tool length and operational requirements
Much of this information is gathered by project managers and engineering teams and compiled into detailed "running orders." These documents serve as the roadmap for field personnel, transforming technical project data into actionable information that technicians can use in the field.
Turning Information into Action:
Experienced field technicians do more than simply follow instructions—they analyze them.
Every project presents unique challenges, and technicians must compare project specifications against the inspection tool's capabilities to ensure the survey can be completed successfully.
The ultimate mission is straightforward: Get the Data. Get the Data Accurate.
Everything else revolves around achieving that goal.
The Importance of Tool Verification.
An inspection tool is only as effective as its ability to collect reliable data.
Before mobilization, technicians verify numerous factors, including:
• Sensor functionality
• Battery capacity
• Data recording capability
• Magnetic flux leakage (MFL) performance
• Tool bypass configurations
• Mechanical integrity of all components
At Enduro Pipeline Services, inspection tools undergo rigorous testing through standardized pipe sections containing known anomalies. These test pulls verify that sensors accurately identify and record defects before deployment to the field.
If any deviations are discovered, corrections are made immediately, and testing continues until performance meets the required standards.
Calibration: The Foundation of Accuracy.
Every sensor and every component undergoes a detailed calibration process.
Calibration ensures that the inspection tool can accurately identify and measure pipeline features and anomalies under real operating conditions. These calibrations are verified before each test pull, creating confidence that the tool will perform as expected once it enters the customer's pipeline.
By this stage, the preparation effort has already involved a significant number of professionals, including:
• Tool builders
• Engineers
• Programmers
• Logistics coordinators
• Project managers
• Field technicians
An ILI run is never the work of one individual—it is the product of an entire team.
Mobilization: The Final Phase Before Departure.
Once all technical checks are complete, field technicians begin loading the inspection tools and support equipment required for the project.
Depending on the scope of work, equipment may be transported using:
• Service trucks
• Utility trailers
• Gooseneck trailers
• Specialized transportation equipment
Every item is secured, documented, and inspected in accordance with internal fleet and logistics procedures before departure.
Only then is the team ready to mobilize.
The Side of the Job Few People See: For many technicians, preparation extends beyond tools and equipment.
It also means preparing to spend days, weeks, or even months away from home.
Field technicians frequently miss birthdays, holidays, family events, and ordinary moments that most people take for granted. Behind every successful project is a family making sacrifices and providing support from home.
These families are often the unsung heroes of the pipeline integrity industry.
No matter how long a project takes, they remain waiting, supporting, and welcoming their loved ones home after another successful mission.
When the Project Is Completed: One phrase is commonly heard among field technicians before departure: "We'll be back when the project is completed." Not tomorrow. Not next week. When the project is completed.
That commitment reflects the mindset of the industry: whatever it takes, however long it takes, the job will be completed safely, accurately, and the right way the first time.
A Tribute to the Field Technician: Being an ILI field technician is not for the faint of heart.
It requires:
• Commitment
• Determination
• Technical expertise
• Adaptability
•Perseverance
Every day, technicians face new challenges in environments where accuracy matters and failure is not an option.
To every field technician working in pipeline integrity: We sacrifice. We endure. We adapt. And every time, we get it done. Thank you for everything you do.
